Hair breakage vs hair loss: the check that changes everything
Hair in the sink means two completely different things depending on where the strand failed. One is a follicle event, the other is mechanical damage, and treating one as the other wastes months.
The short answer
Hair breakage vs hair loss is settled at the ends of the strand: collect what is in your brush or drain and look at them. A small pale bulb at one end means the hair completed its cycle and was released by the follicle — that is shedding, and it is normal up to about a hundred hairs a day. Strands with no bulb, tapered or blunt at both ends, and typically shorter than your hair length, are breakage: the fibre snapped mid-shaft. Shedding is a follicle question. Breakage is a handling question. Almost nothing that fixes one fixes the other.
There is a moment, usually in the shower, where you look at what is in your hand and something drops in your chest. It happens to nearly everyone at some point, and the instinct is to reach for whatever promises regrowth.
Do the check first. It takes half a minute and it determines whether anything you buy next has a chance of working.
The check
Gather the hairs from your brush, your drain catcher, or your pillow. Hold them against a contrasting background — a white sheet of paper if your hair is dark, a dark surface if it is light. Look at both ends of several strands.
A small, pale, slightly bulbous tip at one end is the club-shaped root of a hair that finished its telogen phase and was released. This is shedding. It is a normal part of the growth cycle, and it happens 50 to 100 times a day on a healthy scalp, with more on wash days because washing releases hairs that had already detached and were being held in place by their neighbours.
No bulb — the strand is roughly uniform, or tapers, or ends bluntly at both ends — means the hair broke. Look at the length too: broken strands are usually noticeably shorter than your hair, because they snapped somewhere along the shaft rather than coming out at the root.
One caveat worth stating: the bulb on a telogen hair is small and white-ish, not a fat dark blob. If you see a strand with a thick, dark, gelatinous coating at the root, that is a hair pulled out during anagen with its sheath attached, and it means force was involved.
If it is shedding
Shedding is a follicle-level event, and the follicle answers to hormones, health and time, not to conditioner.
The first question is whether it is actually elevated. Most people have no baseline, and the amount in the drain on a day when you washed after four days is not comparable with a daily-wash day. If you want a real answer, count everything you lose across a full week, divide by seven, and repeat in a month — the trend is the data point, not the number.
If it is genuinely elevated, look back two to three months for a trigger: illness with fever, surgery, a major medication change, sharp weight loss, childbirth, a period of severe stress, or a new hormonal contraceptive. That delay is the signature of telogen effluvium, which is self-limiting and usually resolves within six months of the trigger being removed.
If there is no trigger and the shedding is gradual, thinning at the part or the temples, and the hairs coming out have become finer over time, you are more likely looking at androgenetic hair loss, which is progressive and where early medical treatment matters much more than any routine change.
If it is breakage
Breakage is mechanical, which is good news: it is caused by things you do, so it can be stopped by things you stop doing.
Find where it is happening. Breakage clusters, and the cluster names the cause.
- At the ends only — the ends are the oldest hair on your head and have taken years of accumulated damage. Trim, and reduce heat.
- In a band around a ponytail height — the tie. Change the position daily and use something without a metal join.
- At the crown, as a halo of short hairs — usually brushing, sometimes friction from sleeping.
- Underneath, at the nape — friction against collars and seat backs, or tangling that gets ripped through.
- Uniformly, everywhere, with hair that feels rough — chemical damage, usually bleach, sometimes hard water plus heat.
Then find the moment. Almost all breakage happens in three places: brushing dry tangled hair, brushing or handling wet hair (which is at its weakest when swollen with water), and heat styling. The order of operations while detangling fixes more breakage than any product, and it is free.
The fibre side matters too. Hair that snaps immediately when you stretch it is dry and needs moisture. Hair that stretches a long way and stays stretched has lost protein structure and needs the opposite. Getting that balance backwards is the most common self-inflicted hair injury we see.

Because the wrong diagnosis costs months.
Someone with breakage buys a growth serum, applies it religiously to a scalp that is producing hair perfectly well, and concludes six months later that nothing works — while their brush continues to snap the hair off at the crown. Someone with real shedding buys bond-building treatments for fibre that is structurally fine, and delays the blood test that would have found their ferritin.
Look at the ends of ten strands. Then decide.

What if I have both?
Very common, and the ratio tells you where to spend your effort. Sort a brush-full into two piles and see which is larger.
Are short hairs at my hairline breakage?
Not necessarily. Fine short hairs with tapered tips along the hairline and part are usually new growth, which is good news. Blunt-ended short hairs scattered through the lengths are breakage.
How much breakage is normal?
Some is inevitable — hair is a fibre under daily mechanical stress. It becomes a problem when your ends stop gaining length, your ponytail thins at the bottom, or you can see a halo of short broken hairs at the crown.
Does hair breakage cause hair loss?
Not in the follicle sense — breakage is the fibre snapping, and the follicle keeps producing normally. But severe breakage looks exactly like thinning, because you end up with shorter, sparser hair. The distinction matters because the fixes are opposite: breakage is solved by handling, shedding by finding its cause.
What is the difference between hair breakage and hair fall?
