Hair colour fading fast: the four things actually taking it out
Fade is mostly water, heat, UV and molecule size — not your shampoo. Which colours fade fastest and why, and the changes that make a genuine difference.
The short answer
Colour fades because dye molecules leave the fibre every time it swells with water, because UV and heat degrade them, and because porous hair cannot hold them. Direct dyes and reds have the largest, least stable molecules and fade fastest; permanent brown and black hold longest. The highest-value changes are washing less often in cooler water, UV protection, and lowering heat styling temperatures — surfactant choice matters far less than it is sold as mattering.
You leave the salon with a colour you love. Three weeks later it is a different colour, and the first suspect is always the shampoo.

Where colour lives, and how it leaves
Permanent colour works by opening the cuticle with alkali, letting small precursor molecules into the cortex, and then developing them with peroxide into larger coloured molecules that are physically too big to leave easily. That is why permanent colour lasts: the pigment is trapped by its own size.
Demi-permanent and semi-permanent colour deposits smaller, pre-formed dyes with less or no lifting. The molecules are smaller and closer to the surface, so they wash out over a number of washes.
Direct dyes — most vivid fashion colours, and many reds — are pre-formed pigments that stain the cuticle and outer cortex without any chemical reaction. They sit closest to the surface and leave fastest.
Whatever kind you have, the exit mechanism is the same. Hair swells when wet; the cuticle lifts; dye molecules diffuse out into the water. Every wetting costs you some colour, and how much depends on how long the hair stays wet, how hot the water is, how porous the fibre is, and how large the dye molecule is.
Which means the biggest driver of fade is water itself, not what you dissolved in it.
Why hair colour fades fast: the four forces
Water and swelling. Long, hot showers cost more colour than short warm ones. This is also why swimming is so punishing: prolonged immersion, plus chlorine, which oxidises dye directly.
Heat. Straighteners and dryers accelerate dye degradation, and heat on the ends of coloured hair does double damage — it fades the pigment and increases the porosity that lets the next lot escape.
UV. Sunlight breaks down both natural melanin and artificial dye. Reds and vivid fashion colours are the most vulnerable, and a summer of unprotected sun will do more than a winter of washing. UV filters in hair products help, hats help more.
Porosity. Bleached and damaged hair has lost the lipid layer that limited water uptake, so it swells more and releases dye faster. This is the cruel arithmetic of vivid colour: you have to lighten hair to make the colour show, and lightening it is what makes the colour leave.
Hard water deserves a mention too — mineral deposits alter how light reflects off coloured hair and are responsible for a great deal of unexplained brassiness. If your taps have limescale, that is a suspect.

Blondes have a distinct problem: what fades is the toner, and what is revealed underneath is the underlying warmth the bleach exposed. That is why blonde goes brassy rather than pale — the yellow was always there, it was being cancelled.
What actually extends a colour
Wait 48 hours after colouring before the first wash. The cuticle takes time to close and oxidation to complete. This is the cheapest single gain available.
Wash less often, and cooler. The two changes with the largest effect. If your scalp requires frequent washing, wash the scalp specifically and keep the lengths out of it as much as you can — the technique guide covers this.
Rinse conditioner in cool water. The last thing your hair experiences before drying should not be hot.
Cut the iron temperature. The bands in the heat guide apply doubly to coloured hair.
Use a colour-depositing conditioner between appointments. For reds and vivid colours this is the single most effective maintenance tool — you are topping up the pigment rather than trying to prevent an unpreventable loss.
Protect from UV. A hat, or a leave-in with a UV filter, especially for reds.
Chelate if your water is hard, then follow with a toning or depositing treatment.
The expectation to set
Vivid colours on bleached hair are a high-maintenance hobby, not a purchase. Anyone selling you a shampoo that will keep pink hair pink for three months is selling you something that does not exist.
For everything else, the fade curve is steepest in the first two weeks and then flattens. If you are judging your colour on day 21 against the memory of day one, you are comparing against the peak of a curve that was always going to descend.

Does cold water preserve colour?
Cooler water helps because it swells the fibre less and dissolves less dye. Ice-cold water is not necessary; the difference between hot and warm is where most of the benefit is.
Why do reds fade fastest?
Red dye molecules are relatively large and often applied as direct dyes that sit in the cuticle rather than bonding deeply. They also degrade faster under UV.
Are colour-safe shampoos worth it?
Modestly. Milder surfactants remove slightly less dye per wash. The gains from washing less often and cooler are larger.
Why does my hair color fade so fast?

Does black or brown dye fade too?
It does, just less visibly. Permanent dark shades lose their tone gradually and often shift warm — brown going brassy or reddish — rather than lifting. That warmth was under the colour all along and shows as the deposited pigment leaves.
