Hard water is why your hair changed when you moved
Calcium and magnesium deposit on the hair fibre, block your shampoo from lathering and leave a film that no amount of conditioner removes. What works, and what is sold on hope.
The short answer
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium that deposit on the hair surface and react with soap and surfactants to form an insoluble residue. The result is hair that feels rough and coated, resists conditioner, lathers poorly and colours unpredictably. The effective fixes are a chelating shampoo used occasionally (look for EDTA, sodium gluconate or phytic acid), an acidic rinse, and — if you are committed — a whole-house softener. Most shower filters remove chlorine well and hardness minerals barely at all.
You moved house, or went on holiday, and your hair became someone else's. Rougher, duller, tangled at the ends, and your shampoo suddenly refuses to foam. Nothing about your routine changed. Your water did.
What hard water does to hair
Water hardness is the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium ions, picked up as groundwater passes through chalk and limestone. It is measured in parts per million of calcium carbonate or in degrees; anything above roughly 120 ppm is generally called hard, and large parts of Britain, the American Midwest and southern Europe sit well above that.
Two things happen when that water meets your hair.
Deposition. Calcium and magnesium ions bind to the hair fibre, particularly where the surface carries a negative charge — which means damaged, bleached and high-porosity hair attracts far more of it. The minerals build up on the cuticle over repeated washes, and they do not simply rinse away.
Reaction with your products. Surfactants and soaps react with these ions to form insoluble salts — the same scum you see on a bath. That film sits on the hair, blocks lather, and prevents conditioner from doing what it is meant to do.
The measurable consequences: increased surface roughness, reduced shine, more friction between strands, and in tensile testing, hair from hard-water washing tends to show reduced strength. Practically, you get a fibre that tangles more, breaks more when combed, feels coated no matter how much you rinse, and turns brassy or dull if it is coloured.
How to tell if this is your problem
- Your shampoo will not lather no matter how much you use.
- There is limescale on your kettle, your taps or your shower screen.
- Hair feels rough and squeaky-coated immediately after washing, before any product.
- Conditioner seems to sit on the surface and does nothing.
- The problem started with a house move, or is dramatically better on holiday.
- Colour-treated hair goes brassy or fades unevenly and quickly.
Your water company publishes hardness by postcode, and it takes about a minute to look up. That is a better first step than buying anything.
What actually works
A chelating shampoo, used occasionally. Chelating agents bind metal ions and carry them away in the rinse. On a label, look for EDTA (or disodium EDTA), sodium gluconate, sodium phytate or phytic acid, and gluconolactone. This is the only wash-off product that genuinely removes mineral deposits rather than covering them.
Use it every two to four weeks, not every wash — chelating shampoos are thorough, and thorough is hard on colour and on dry lengths. Follow with a proper conditioning treatment.
Note that "clarifying" and "chelating" are not synonyms even though the words are used interchangeably in marketing. A clarifying shampoo is a stronger detergent aimed at product residue; a chelating one is aimed at metal ions. For ordinary product buildup the first is right; for hard water you want the second, and many good products do both.
An acidic rinse between washes. Diluted apple cider vinegar (roughly one tablespoon in a cup of water) or a citric-acid-based rinse lowers pH, helps dissolve some mineral, and flattens the cuticle. It is a genuine help and a poor substitute for chelation. Apply to lengths, leave a minute, rinse.
A whole-house water softener. The only complete fix, and the only one that addresses your skin as well. Ion exchange replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium. It is a plumbing job with an ongoing salt cost, and if you own your home and have very hard water, people who install one rarely regret it.
Bottled or filtered final rinse. Not glamorous, but a jug of soft or distilled water poured over the hair as the last step removes the mineral-laden water and costs nothing to try. Realistically this suits shorter hair and people at their limit.
The chlorine question
Chlorine is a separate issue that often travels with the hard-water conversation. It is a genuine irritant for some scalps and it accelerates colour fade, and unlike hardness, it is easily removed by carbon filtration. Swimmers get the extreme version: chlorinated pool water plus copper from pool pipework is what turns bleached hair green — that is copper deposition, not chlorine, and a chelating shampoo is the specific fix.
Wetting your hair with clean water before swimming genuinely helps, because a fibre already saturated absorbs less pool water.
Putting it together
If you are in a hard water area and your hair is behaving badly, run this for six weeks: a chelating shampoo every third week, an acidic rinse once a week, conditioner applied to soaking-wet hair rather than towel-dried hair, and no new products so you can tell what did what.
If your hair improves, the problem was your water. If it does not, the problem was somewhere else and you have just eliminated the most common environmental confounder — which is worth doing before you spend anything on a routine overhaul.
Common questions
Do shower filters soften water?
Almost never. Common carbon and KDF filters reduce chlorine and some metals, which helps with smell and irritation, but removing calcium and magnesium requires ion exchange, which shower-head units are too small to do meaningfully.
Is a vinegar rinse enough?
It helps at the margin — an acidic rinse dissolves some mineral and flattens the cuticle — but it does not chelate the way a proper agent does. Use it as maintenance between chelating washes, diluted, on the lengths.
Can hard water cause hair loss?
There is no good evidence that it does. It causes texture problems, dullness and breakage from tangling, which can look like thinning from a distance.
